Biar Castle

Declared a National Monument and Asset of Cultural Interest, it is one of the main attractions in Biar and part of the Vinalopó Castles Route (Biar, Castalla, La Atalaya and Sax). Built in the mid-Twelfth century on a rocky hill at 2,460 ft., this castle of Muslim origin preserves a double walled and castellated enclosure with a wall walk that surrounds the main tower which proudly stands at 62 ft. The castle is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel.

If you come to spend a few days in Biar, we recommend that you visit the Municipal Ethnographic Museum, an exhibition of over 1,000 items with a prominent presence of the important pottery and glazed ceramics traditions in Biar (3-minute walk from the hotel); the Renaissance-style Church of Our Lady of La Asunción (2-minute walk), the ogival aqueduct which dates back to the Fifteenth century, measuring 230 ft. in length and built in stone and fired bricks (13-minute walk); and the Gothic chapels of El Rosario, Santos de Piedra, Santa Lucía and El Pozo de las Nieves.

Food and wine

Gastronomy is one of Biar’s strongest features, offering rich dishes which include rice specialities and paella, traditional recipes such as olleta (vegetable stew soup) puchero con pelotas (vegetable soup with pork meatballs), aniseed rolls and mantecados (lardy cakes). Wine lovers can also visit the many different wineries in the area: Bodegas Las Virtudes, Bodegas Finca Collado, Bodegas Bocopa and Bodegas Francisco Gómez.

Hiking and bicycle tourism

The town of Biar is located at the foothills of the Mariola mountains and surrounded by them. Half of its territory is forest mass and extensive pine tree areas. Around the town there are many hiking trails which you can easily get to from the centre, especially in the areas of Fontanella, Penya Tallà and Reconco. The setting is ideal for cycling, horse riding and hiking, as well as for multi-adventure activities.
